Hurricane Katrina Refugee Report #8: Despair (but not for the reasons you probably think...unless you know me pretty well...)

The Sprint Aircard is not Mac compatable without some serious geek-tweaking. Verizon has a compatible card, but Charlottesville and it's environs are a black hole, a great void on the Verizon coverage map. And now the Mac is whacked! It won't complete its start-up and I have no diagnostic disks or softfware install/restore disks with me!!! I cannot function when I'm this cut-off from the the Wide World of Web. I cannot function if my Mac is whacked. I can't live in the world of Windows and dial-up. I don't have my house and home, my clothes, my instruments and recording gear, my paints, brushes, fabrics, yarns, needles or any of my other creative accoutrements, not to mention my friends and the rest of my family, and my independence. And now no Mac??????

Pray for me, for the loss of my sane mind is surely at hand.

Is there anywhere in the area where you could rent a laptop or buy a cheap used one good enough to get on the Web, or have your Mac repaired? If so, we could help you with that ($)?

As far as dialup: I feel your pain. I'm stuck with it too, except that I'm the only user of the phone line, so I'm better off, but I know how frustrating it can be to use.

Hang in there Lisa, let's sort one problem at a time, it will work out, you'll see. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed, it's a big pile of things to deal with, but individually, they can all be tackled (and you're not alone to deal with them, don't forget).

*big hugs*

Thanks Muse, that's a good idea. I'll look into that. And I just sent an e-mail over to Richard asking his advice on the minimal system requirements. I think I'll make some calls on this and maybe pi, my Mac brother, can help put with the discs needed to fix the Mac.

Here I am to save the day!!! Hopefully.

I hope you're on OS X because I forgot all my OS 9 tricks.

If you can boot into OS X then skip to operation number 2.

1. First lets try booting your Mac into single-user mode by hitting the power and holding down "Apple" and "S".

After all the DOS-like text stuff finishes rolling by type this command followed by enter:

fsck -f

exactly as it appears above. fsck, space, -, f.

This is OS X's built in file system check app and it could fix your prob.

If it fixed something it should say something like "THE DISK (your hd here) MODIFIED". Run it again until it says that everything is OK.

Type "reboot" then enter.

2. After it starts into OS X run Disk Utility and select your drive and repair the permissions. If you've never done this it could take a long time.

I hope this works.

If not email me at pi22seven at we'll chat it up.

Lisa--I miss you so much. Such an odd thing to say, because I know we have never met in person. I'm in a funked-out area right now where I've heard something I know I should not feel anything about, because it is not worth caring about. (And yet I do. Ahh, ego). Lisa, you are one of the few beautiful giants I know that I owe so much to--because just knowing you are alive, you are here, that is enough to inspire me and keep me going through difficulty. It seems so easy just to give up and quit believing in people sometimes from the trashy and catty ugliness that surrounds this IU hole. You are a muse to me, just by Being, and nothing more than Being. Thank you, thank you.

Oh, pi, how you make me swoon now with all the Mac/Unix geek speak. Of course I'm on OS X! Thanks so much for the refresher. (I have all my procedural notes in a little book on my desk and can't ever remember things like this.) I'm going to work on it tonight. Pray for me! And if it works, our next project will be a hack to get the aircard to work on the Mac, which is possible according to the folks at But their description of the hack is deliberately cryptic so that folks like me will have to pay for their spoon-fed instructions in PDF form. (Free for those who buy cards from their company.) First things first, though.

Hangyul, I'm very touched by your words and think the same of you, really I do. Just remember that the light you shine can burn right through those confining verbal ropes cast by small minds. Remember that nothing has any meaning but the meaning we give it, (and feel the power in that fact), and finally, remember that there is a life at the end of the tunnel. And you're half way through it.

I'm so very honored that just my Being is enough, but if you ever need more, you know I'm here for you. Anytime, unconditionally.

Hi Lisa. Found your site through a link from another one that I read. I have a summer home outside of Michigan City, IN that is available for a few months, maybe even the school year. It has DSL wireless access and the area isn't as hick as it may sound. While in the country, it's about an hour outside of Chicago.

Sounds like you might be settled, though, with kids in school. If you're interested, or know a family that still needs to find a place, please send me an email at

Dominique, thanks for the offer. With the kids in school, we're probably not going anywhere for a while, but I will keep my ear to the ground in case I know of anyone in need of a place. Actually, there is one person who comes to mind- a former student of mine who is a single mother with a teenaged son (a really good kid)who had been living on campus and had to evacuate. Last I spoke to her, she was staying in a church in some little town in northern Louisiana with several other families. She's a wonderful young woman and she may be looking for a place. If so, I'll let you know. Again, thanks for the offer.
